Mobile Zeitgeist - Mobile Search Statistics

This page provides statistics on the searches performed using the Berry 411 mobile search tool, and is intended to fill some of the gaps in publicly available data on mobile search behavior.

With about 150,000 searches each month, these hits provide a statistically meaningful sample of overall mobile searches, skewed perhaps by the predominance of Blackberry users in the sample.

This data can be freely redistributed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike license. I will update this data monthly, and attempt to pick out longer term trends over time.

February 2006 | November 2005

February 2006

The breakdown by type is pretty consistent compared with November.

Starbucks is a big gainer in yellow page queries, for some reason.

Rim has entirely dropped off of the top 10 stock quries, while Apple is a big gainer.

Top phones are pretty similar to November, except that the 8700 has entered the list.

November 2005

Here is the breakdown of searches by category. Clearly, local yellow page searches make up the lions share of what people are interested in.

Here are popular queries in various categories, by descending order of popularity. Major retailers dominate the yellow page search results.

Finally, here are the five most popular phones using Berry 411.

Related Data

The ClickZ network has a report called The Utilitarian Life of the Mobile Internet that gives a breakdown of overall mobile internet usage by web site category and age.

The ClickZ data shows general internet search as dominating over yellow pages search which is the opposite of the Berry 411 results, for reasons that I believe are clear.

[…] There is a fair amount of interest in mobile search but a scarcity of publicly available data on mobile search usage. Mobile Zeitgeist provides statistics on mobile search behavior based on the 150,000 or so searches made using Berry411 each month. […]

Very nice, Phil. Will the stats be updated at this URL each month?

Yes, I’ve built a mostly automated process to do monthly updates.

i guess i’m the one who pushed the buckeyes up the list!

Funny that pizza is #1 search, i always use it to test if berry411 is working, and to demo it to friends\customers. I might have thrown off the results! hah

I always use pizza myself for demos as well. But the numbers of searches for pizza are large enough that I don’t think it’s just the two of us.
