Updated Beyond411 for the Storm fixes GPS issues (v4.31)

A new version of Beyond411 for the Storm is now available at http://thebogles.com/storm/berry411.jad

Version 4.31 should [*] enable Blackberry Storm users to use GPS. It also fixes a bug on the plugins settings screen in which buttons were not clickable.

[*] I don’t have an actual storm, so I have only been able to test on a simulator.

Update: Unfortunately, there have been numerous issues running on the real Storm which I can’t reproduce on the simulator. I’m going to have to put Storm development on hold unless the simulator becomes more accurate or unless RIM or somebody is kind enough to loan me a Storm to verify on.

Technical Details :

I stumbled on this thread on the Blackberry support forums which includes the particular magical LocationProvider criteria needed to make GPS work on the Storm:

     Criteria criteria = new Criteria();
     criteria.setPreferredPowerConsumption(Criteria.POWER_USAGE_MEDIUM);
     criteria.setPreferredResponseTime(16);
     criteria.setHorizontalAccuracy(100);
     criteria.setCostAllowed(false);

The GPS seems to be working good now. The search results are listed from closest to farthest from my location. But, when I try to get direction at first it gave me an error code of: “HTTP error, response code 500″ now it gives me directions from the center of the state not my current location.

Once again Thank you for an app I use daily.

I love Beyond411 - but the Storm version seems to have problems unfortunately. It either never loads or it locks my phone up which only a battery pull fixes.

I tested BY411 outside of my work office and it worked great !! …so the problem I was having must be only related to the office setting.

I’m a Happy Camper !!

As Kris states, I am having similar lock ups and non loading which is only resolved by battery pull as well. Booted up one time and proceeds to lock up upon reuse. Looking forward to having this resolved.

mine seems to be working fine now.

As said above, when it works it is great. Seems to be less than 50/50 on locking up the BB. I think it needs more work.

I downloaded beyond411 for my BB Storm OS .75, and when I clicked on the icon, no response. I tried clicking on other icons, no response. I could only unfreeze this by turning the phone off or doing a battery pull. When I tried using again, after a battery pull, it would freeze up again. I’ve tried multiple times to try and use it, nothing working, never got past the icon. Now, I just deleted it, maybe the next version will work on my storm.

I have downloaded Beyond411 on to my Storm four times. Multiple issues have arisen. First, pushing icon and NO response. Second, screen lockups. Third, accelerometer feature doesn’t work so can only work in portrait mode will not switch to landscape mode. Fourth, when I try to do a search it asks for location, directing me “edit settings”, I enter address and “save” but when I return to search the settings are missing. Don’t get me wrong from the reviews I have read this an excellent application. Just doesn’t work for the BB Storm. Could it be Verizon?

As seen in the comments above, many folks are having issues on the Storm. Since I can’t reproduce these on the simulator it’s unfortunately very hard to fix them.

I’m running a storm with .75 and the appleberry skin. When I try to run beyond411 with the gps active, it will lock up the phone and beyond411 will not start. Sometimes, it will eventually let me use other programs, and the application switcher will show beyond411 as an active program, but if I try to switch to beyond411, it won’t do anything, even if I turn off the GPS. However, if I do a battery pull, turn off the GPS, and try running beyond411, it will work fine. So, it seems to be the GPS that is causing the problem (at least on mine).

Beyond V4.30 worked fine on my Verizon Storm with .75 OS. However, I have numerous problems now with V4.31.

Where can I get V4.30 as OTA or as a down load file to my PC.
