Apple Mighty Mouse Repair using Purell

As the Mighty Mouse Repair Guide notes:

After the release of Apple’s Mighty Mouse™ many users found that the scroll wheel on the mouse easily became clogged and difficult to use - especially when trying to scroll down.

Apple’s own site suggests using water to clean the scroll wheel but this method has proved either temporary or unsuccessful for those that have tried it.

The repair site goes on to give instructions on how to disassemble the mouse to clean the scroll wheel using a razer blade or scalpel.

Good to know that Mighty Mouse surgery is available as a last resort, but I found an easier alternative that worked for me– a dollop of Purell.

I applied it to the wheel, spun the wheel, waited a few minutes for it to dry, and was good as new.

I’ve used a similar approach to fixing the trackwheel on my RIM Blackberry in the past, with no ill-effects.

Worked great! Thanks, Phil.

I was about starting mighty mouse surgery, assuming that I perhaps end up with buying another one. At the very last moment, I found your blog. I found a small bottle of Purell in my bathroom and followed your very simple instruction (What will I lose?). Ta-da! It worked!! My mouse is now screening really like a new one. Thanks, Phil!

I meant scrolling - not screening, of course.

Tried the disassembly lark, but the screws for the ball unit are too small for my screwdrivers, tried the Apple fix of water then found this - after months of a dysfunctional mouse, now guess what it works! And to think I use this stuff daily in my “office” . Humm now need some super glue to replace the lower bezel which need not have come off in the first place. Thanks.

I was trying to avoid surgery on my mm, tried you’re method and it works perfectly, thank you!!!!!!!

Very effective.

Thank you very much, came across this and its revived my MM and quickly too.
